Spooky Street Art

Monday, December 22nd, 2008, Petra Raddatz, Pixelpark

He did it again! There is this pile of garbage and you walk by one day. And you walk by the other day and there it is: the mysterious “6″ or “6de” or “1kg.de” or “4rtist.com”, painted right on the waste - on an old mattress, a pile of bulk rubbish, building material along road works or even a tire of the big Volksbühne truck trailer parked in Linienstrasse. Have a look at the artist’s website www.6de.de and find a lot more lovely and funny street art paintings. Whenever you walk around in Mitte / Prenzlauer Berg, keep your eyes open and you definitely will find a piece of work!

Kaufbar revisited: An- und Verkauf-Stores in Berlin

Friday, September 12th, 2008, Korbinian Frank, Pixelpark

David, I just love your postings :) … for those of you who want to get ahead the used-furniture-food-chain, think about where used furniture comes from before it gets pre-selected for you by Prenzlauer Berg taste - right! It’s the deceased.

This is not an attempt to trick you into murder, but to look out for the A&V (Ankauf & Verkauf) - Stores all over Berlin. Trash stores that get their stuff from liquidating apartments after their inhabitants have left (and there’s no one to get the stuff or no one wants to get the stuff). They’re mostly run by traders who let themselves into some bargaining. If you’re nice they might also give you a coffee or tee or beer or schnapps …, but I for my part would not ask.

There are few less glamorous places in Berlin but also few more exiting ones: dig through stores cramped with trash and valuables, climb over sideboards into hidden side-rooms, discover series of exquisit wine glasses next to old mustard glasses. Find yourself your own personal collection of silverware (as I did) or a cupboard, a wrist watch, bysycle or toilet seat. It’s all there.

Small- and pretty cleaned up type.

Small- and pretty cleaned up type.

You can recognise these stores often by chairs and closets, sometimes carpets lining the sidewalk next to them. Be careful not to get lured into one of the stylish ones (take a look at the sales person). They often relocate. There used to be at least two on Prenzlauer Allee, supplying Prenzlauer Berg, the first one between Danziger Str. and Stargarder Straße, the other one south of Danziger. Now I would look on Greifwalder Str. and Danziger Straße towards Friedrichshain. Or go to one of the districts further out of the city: Weissensee (worth a trip anyhow), Pankow, Treptow.

Inside: imagine it a bit darker.

The pictures are from the web and therefore not too realistic — if I pass by one, I’ll make a better one to post it here.

temporäre kunsthalle

Thursday, September 11th, 2008, holger volland METADESIGN

of course other cities have their contemporary art exhibition halls. but only in berlin it is placed at the former stadtschloss place in the heart of our city: from june on The Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin will be a temporary must-see-site at a location where until some month ago the Palast der Republik reflected the evening sun in its blushed windows. the Palast had to leave but at least now you can visit the beautifully designed building with exterior works by gerwald rockenschaub. visti severl times, the exterior art work will change twice a year.  www.kunsthalle-berlin.com/

Wear your favorite T-shirt…

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008, Tina Schoepflin, MetaDesign

Wear your favorite T-shirt, grab a flashlight, a camera and your best friend.

Climb up Teufelsberg: an artificial hill built by the Allies after WWII from the rubble of Berlin. On top you‘ll find the ruin of a Buckminster Fuller dome – oh no, wait it’s not – it is the remains of what used to be one of the largest listening stations of the US National Security Agency (NSA).

Anyway, don’t be scared! Turn on the flashlight and carefully make your way up to the rooftop.

And now: Your all set – begin with your fanciest fashion shoot ever…

There is more to it than you think (2)

Saturday, September 6th, 2008, Flip Sellin, COORDINATION

The street level Hansaplatz U-bahn station is one of the good examples of misengeneered late 50ies townplanning. But don’t be put off by it. A Walk around the area set within the Tiergarten will unveil atypical buildings of the most famous modernist architects and designers. Among them Mies van der Rohe, Alvar Aalto, Oskar Niemeyer (pic), Egon Eiermann to name a few. If you after more info, there is organized walks and literature on this (successful) experimental post WW2 urban recovery project.

The fascination - and sometimes deep love - with our beloved city often comes from second and third sight encounters. A nice way for experiencing and therewith growing to our city are the meandering back- and courtyards you will find in all districts. So this is a general suggestion: If you walk past one of those large Berlin “Einfahrten” give a little hump to the door, and when you are lucky it is open. Have a peek inside, because sometimes a small universe of up to 8 (!) courtyards align like pearls on a string. Its here where you feel the inhabitants hearts pounding…and not all of them are as disney as the Hackesche Höfe.

1000 pieces of furniture

Friday, September 5th, 2008, Florian Dengler MetaDesign

Can you imagine 1000 pieces of furniture on 80 square metres? This incredible show is presented by Das Museum der Dinge, the museum of things. Besides that you can explore german everyday objects from the last 100 years, quite entertaining and educative. They teach you how to separate good from bad taste. Even though the bad taste things sometimes look quite fresh.
